“Se Murió Fidel” portrays the days after the death of Fidel Castro in 2016. On holiday in Cuba when the news was announced, and without a press credential, Giovanni Bello stayed in the streets, away from the official stands. Over nine days he photographed the crowds in a silent and unrecognizable Cuba.
Part visual reportage, part personal essay, the book portrays a nation at a pivotal moment of transition. Its release coincides with two anniversaries: the centenary of Fidel’s birth in August, and the tenth anniversary of his death on 25 November.
The book opens with a text essay blending reportage, memoir and reflection, followed by 66 colour photographs sequenced from the first moments of mourning in Havana to the funeral procession in Santiago de Cuba. A journalistic yet personal view of a historic moment, seen from the inside, with camera and notebook.
Trilingual edition (Spanish, Portuguese and English) published by Vento Leste.
