Solo Exhibition: Whisper by Dana Peiyi Wang

  • PHOTO BOOK CAFE 4 Leonard Circus London, England, EC2A 4DQ United Kingdom (map)

Is love a connection like a gentle whisper? While society often demands loud declarations, genuine support frequently exists quietly in the unstated promise: I am here, and I am here for you.

Whisper, a photographic solo exhibition, focuses on the profound strength and resilient connections rooted in womanhood within London communities. It explores what it truly means to love and be loved beyond conventional boundaries, appreciate the quiet acts of care that keep people moving forward.

The exhibition is deeply rooted in Wang’s personal experience of relocating to the UK six years ago. Far from home, she discovered that life is often sustained not by grand gestures, but by the subtle, everyday presence of friends and chosen families. This lived reality echoes Bell Hooks’s All About Love—which critiques how patriarchal structures isolate care within the rigid confines of the traditional nuclear family. In response, Whisper deliberately steps away from the romanticised mainstream to document the intergenerational bonds and platonic lifelines Wang has witnessed and leaned on.

Capturing shared intimacy in domestic spaces, the project treats physical gestures and quiet companionship as visual whispers—soft, unguarded expressions of solidarity.

Ultimately, Whisper challenges Amatonormativity—the pervasive assumption that exclusive romantic partnerships are life's ultimate goal. By elevating these quiet, platonic, and familial bonds, the exhibition celebrates "undefined feelings": love and connections that lack traditional institutional labels, but are no less powerful, essential, or true.
