Leaving home is often imagined as a single act of departure, while belonging rarely begins upon arrival. Instead, it unfolds gradually through new relationships, unfamiliar ways of living, and the quiet repetition of everyday life.

Somewhere Along the Way brings together a selection of photographs by Melbourne-based artist Wenmiao Xin that explore identity, belonging, and transformation. Having lived away from China for the past nine years, Xin reflects on how living elsewhere gradually reshapes our sense of self. Through new relationships, unfamiliar cultural contexts, and everyday encounters, she came to understand herself in new ways.

Xin now describes herself as a lesbian, a feminist, and a woman of colour. These identities are not predetermined paths, but points of orientation through which she understands herself. Her photographs trace the subtle process of becoming, as a sense of self gradually comes into being.

When we begin to inhabit another place, are we discovering a new home, or a new way of belonging?

About Artist：

Wenmiao Xin is a visual artist and photographer based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. Working across photography and moving image, her practice explores intimacy, identity, gender, sexuality, migration, and cultural belonging through constructed visual narratives. Drawing on personal memory and lived experience, Xin examines the intersections between cultural frameworks, queer identity, self-representation, and contemporary diasporic experiences.
